Hungary

Thermal baths, palinka & leftover grandeur

Hungary Travel Guide:

Hungary is a small, landlocked country in Central Europe. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, then folded into the Soviet bloc, it now sits awkwardly in the EU – taking the funds, ignoring the values. Today, it’s best known for its thermal baths, cheap rent, and Viktor Orbán’s brand of nationalist politics.

The capital, Budapest, gets most of the attention, with its grand architecture and long nights. But there’s more beyond the Danube – quiet countryside, faded spa towns, and a language that defeats even the most committed learners. I lived here for three years. This page collects everything I’ve written about Hungary – travel guides, political notes, and the kind of things you only notice when you stay too long.
