Ratti Gali was the first trek I did in Pakistan, yes – it’s a bit of a disgrace considering it’s the country I have been born and raised in. I did this trek as part of an adventure society I was a part in college. And I may be a bit biased here, your first hike is like your first love. Might not be the best out there, you’re going to go on and have a lot more adventures, but it leaves a mark. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s objectively a beautiful location, but I may have my love goggles on as I write this.

Depending on where you are coming from, you have to get to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Arriving in Dawarian
The trek is accessible from three routes, i.e., from Dowarian, Neelam Valley, from Burawai, Kaghan Valley, and from Jalkhad, Kaghan Valley. I did it from Dowarian and that’s the route I will talk about in this article. Once you reach Azad Kashmir, you will need to make your way to Dowarian, the starting point of the trek. Dowarian is a small village located at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level, it is approximately 150km from Muzaffarabad. This is where the real adventure begins.

After reaching the base-camp, trekking is left of the tour, which takes between 30-40 minutes to reach the lake. Another feasible option is to set your camp up here and do a day trip to the lake. It’s a distance of 5km from here to the lake and an elevation gain of 300m.

Accommodations and Amenities
Camping at Ratti Gali Lake
Camping is a popular option for those visiting Ratti Gali Lake, and that is what I would recommend doing.
Local Facilities
If camping is not your preferred option, another option is to stay in Keran valley, from there you can take a jeep and do a day trip to the lake and come back. However, this would be very rushed so make sure you start in the early morning hours.
Environmental Considerations
Back when I went to Ratti Gali, it was pristine and untouched. Recent friends who have visited complain about the trash left behind by other campers. To minimize your impact on the environment, avoid littering and dispose of all trash properly. Additionally, stick to the established trail. Straying off the path can cause erosion and damage to the fragile ecosystem.
As you trek to Ratti Gali Lake, you may encounter a variety of local wildlife. It’s important to remember that you are a visitor in their home, and should respect their habitat. Do not disturb or feed the animals, and avoid getting too close. Additionally, do not remove any plants or animals from the area. Leave everything as you found it, so that others can enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
