Nicaragua is a beautiful country that is often overlooked by tourists but with its stunning natural landscapes, rich culture and friendly people, it should be on top of your list. Located in Central America, is a country of remarkable geographical diversity. From its stunning Pacific and Caribbean coastlines to its lush tropical rainforests and towering volcanic peaks, Nicaragua offers a wealth of beautiful landscapes and adventure. The country’s landscape is dominated by a chain of volcanic mountains, with over 20 active volcanoes, including the iconic ConcepciΓ³n and Mombacho Volcano. Additionally, Nicaragua is home to the largest freshwater body in Central America, Lake Nicaragua, which is dotted with picturesque islands. With its rich biodiversity and varied terrain, Nicaragua is a perfect destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Planning Your Trip
When planning a trip to Nicaragua, there are several factors to consider to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some important aspects to keep in mind:
Best Time to Visit
Nicaragua has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: dry season and rainy season. The dry season runs from November to April, while the rainy season runs from May to October. The best time to visit Nicaragua is during the dry season, which offers sunny days and comfortable temperatures. However, keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and bigger crowds.
Travel Budget Tips
Nicaragua is one of the most affordable of the Central American countries. Accommodation, street food, and transportation are generally inexpensive, but tours, activities, and alcohol can add up quickly. It’s also a good idea to have some cash on hand, as many places do not accept credit cards. I think a daily budget of USD $70 – 90 is good for one person. Of course, this can be higher depending on what activities you choose to do.
Visa for Nicaragua
Many passports do not need a visa if they are staying for less than 90 days. If you are a citizen from a country not on the list of visa free travel, you can still visit Nicaragua if you have a valid multiple entry US, Schengen or Canadian visa.
Safety
As a female traveler, I feel compelled to address safety concerns in every country I visit. Nicaragua’s tourism took a hit with the riots in 2018. A lot of websites will tell you it is not safe to visit, but in my personal experience I don’t see any dangers that I wouldn’t see anywhere else in the world. You should be careful of petty theft whether it’s here, or walking down the streets of Paris. I’ve found that tourists are quite safe here, and if you get out of the main citites, Nicaragua has some of the most warm, hospitable people.

- The political situation is a hot topic amongst locals, I love discussing history and politics and was advised against it from my airbnb host.
- Air conditioning is not common in most areas, if that’s a preference for you make sure to add that filter in airbnb and booking.com when you are selecting your accommodation.
Getting to Nicaragua
As a travel destination, Nicaragua is still relatively undiscovered, but that doesn’t mean it’s hard to get to. Whether you’re arriving by air or land, there are plenty of options to suit your budget and travel style.
Flights to Nicaragua
The easiest way to get to Nicaragua is by air. There is one main international airport in Nicaragua: Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in the capital city of Managua. It has direct flights to major cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
If you’re on a budget, you can usually find flights at a fair price to Nicaragua with a little bit of research. Keep in mind that flights are usually more expensive during peak travel season (December to April), so plan accordingly.
Arriving by Land or Sea
If you’re already in Central America, you can easily reach Nicaragua by land or sea. There are several border crossings between Nicaragua and its neighbouring countries, including Costa Rica, Honduras, and El Salvador.
If you’re arriving by land, you can take a public bus, tourist shuttle, or private transfer. Public buses are the cheapest option, but they can be crowded and uncomfortable. Tourist shuttles and private transfers are more expensive, but they offer more comfort and convenience.
If you’re arriving by sea, you can take a ferry from El Salvador or Honduras. Keep in mind that ferry schedules can be unreliable, so be sure to check ahead of time.
Transport within Nicaragua
Once you have arrived in Nicaragua, there are several options for getting around the country. The most common modes of transportation within Nicaragua include buses, taxis depending on your budget.
Buses are the most popular and economical way to travel around Nicaragua within a city and also intercity. Local “chicken buses” are colorful, old American school buses converted that serve as the primary mode of transportation for locals and budget travelers.
Taxis are another common mode of transportation in Nicaragua, particularly in cities and popular tourist areas. Taxis are readily available and often affordable, but it’s important to negotiate the fare beforehand or ensure the driver uses the meter to avoid any surprises.
To go to Ometepe, you can take a ferry from the ferry port San Jorge near Rivas to the island.
San Juan del Sur and the Pacific Coast
San Juan del Sur is quaint beach town, a popular destination for surfers and beach lovers. The town is known for its relaxed vibe, colorful buildings, and lively nightlife. The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua offers some of the best surfing in Central America, with waves suitable for all levels of experience.
Things to do in San Juan del Sur
- There are so many beautiful beaches to choose from. San Juan del Sur beach is the main one in town but I would suggest you venture out to more remote beaches for an authentic experience. Be mindful that a lot of these beaches don’t offer a lot of amenities but they are peaceful and tranquil.
- If you want some adventure, hike up the Christ of the Mercy statue. It provides a panoramic view of the town and coastline. I recommend going there at sunset to see the sunset over the
- If you are there on a Sunday, attend the SundayFunday, a bar crawl very popular with tourists.
- See the many beaches the town has to offer. Playa Maderas is a popular option, right next to it Playa Marsella and Playa Lorenzo offer amazing sunsets.
Ometepe Island
Ometepe Island is a tropical paradise located in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America. The island is home to two towering volcanoes, lush rainforests, and pristine beaches. You can hike to the top of Volcano Concepcion for stunning views of the island and the lake, visit the San Ramon waterfall, or relax on the black sand beaches of. To get to Ometepe, you can take a ferry from San Jorje near Rivas. The ferry journey takes 1.5 hours and costs around USD $2 per person.

Granada
Granada is a colonial town with colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and historic churches. It’s a charming city, where you can see the European influence in the architecture and the way the city is designed.
